Log #2 - Ember/Primeideal

Hello.

Welcome to our second entrant to our blog series - Ember (aka the One with the usage of the Phrase - Google Fucking Maps in her story)

1. How did you get started in fan-fiction?
I started in fanfiction a long time ago! I've been making up stories ever since I was a little kid, but probably the first time I made up fanfiction per se was when my parents encouraged me to write an alternate ending to Animorphs to deal with my disappointment in it. I discovered Fanfiction.Net in 2005 (linked from a Redwall forum) and then it was off to the races!

2. What are your fandom(s) and why do you like/love/hate them?
Probably my longest-running fandom is Animorphs. I love the varieties of aliens and worldbuilding; I hate the drastic shifts from hopeful to stupidly silly discarded subplots to bleakness and "you're dumb and stupid for wanting closure."

Star Wars--love the family relationships of the OT, hate the clumsy reboot-ness of the sequel trilogy.

Harry Potter--love the hints of minor characters to explore, hate the point-missing expressed by some fans.

There's zillions more, but I'll try to keep it brief. :p

3. What is the most easiest/hardest part about writing?
Easiest part: dialogue! I like wit and bouncing lines off each other. (Sometimes this gets me in trouble when I go for paragraphs and paragraphs without using dialogue tags.)

Hardest part: probably describing scenery, or indicating the passage of time when I need to abruptly jump.

4. Who are your inspirations?
These days I do a lot of fic writing for exchanges on Ao3/dreamwidth; writing something based on someone else's prompts is a nice jumping-off point (and hopefully there's at least one person who'll like to read it)! Sometimes more in the direction of "I wish this would have happened instead" or "this twist would have been a more interesting one."

5. Ever fantasized about your work being made in a movie? If so, who are the actors that would be in the film?
Not really--I don't watch a lot of movies and keep up with many actors, so I don't have a good answer for the "fancasting."

6. Your favourite line you have written?
Oh, I can't pick just one! :D

Because I hardly ever swear in real life, I think "I need a motherfucking “Avoid Panhandlers” route on my Google fucking Maps." (from Liberty and Justice and Shit, @mayoremanuel fic) is great because it's so out of character for me.

"Whndsths,'mgngtSwdn" <- ("Who needs this, I'm going to Sweden") from "Everyone In My AP Lit Class Is Dead")

"I'm not naive--I know what game we're playing, and it's not Go Fish." - from "Five Underpromotions."

Ask me another day and I'll have another answer or three.

7. Any advice for aspiring writers?
Depends on what you're aspiring to (poetry? original fic? fanfic?)

Write what you like--I know this is easier said than done. Don't be too hard on yourself if you sometimes get blocked. Speaking only for myself, I like to play around with formal constraints (sonnets, lipograms, etc.) because it makes me think carefully about what words I use, and the restrictions can be kind of inspiring/freeing in their own way. So I'd encourage you to experiment with that, but don't feel bound to it.

8. Where can we find you on social media? Where can we find your work?
primeideal.dreamwidth.org; also primeideal on Tumblr and EmberNickel on Twiter (rarely used). Most of my work is on archiveofourown as primeideal; some older stuff is on Fanfiction.Net as Ember Nickel (and not crossposted).

9. Tell us about yourself?
Autistic, Christian (Lutheran), just got my PhD in mathematical logic. Love baseball, hate migraines. I have strong opinions about board games.

10. If you could nominate someone else to take this survey, who would it be?
Pass; there are so many great fanfic writers out there I'd feel remiss naming just one.

11. Your favorite authors?
Other than the creators of my fandoms, I have to give shoutouts to Roger Angell for great prose and Christian Bök for very impressive constraints. And Martin Gardner for a whole bunch of mathy things.
